Know the Signs of Depression

Depression, unfortunately, is not a disorder that is restricted to adults. Children, adolescents, and teens are commonly affected by this crippling condition that can rob a person of their livelihood. It is estimated that over 11 million adults ages 18 and over, and over 3 million adolescents ages 12-17 experience depression every year. This is just under 12% of U.S population in these age groups. This very common mood disorder affects how people feel, both mentally and physically, how they think and behave, and can significantly impair livelihood and interfere with daily responsibilities and quality of life.

Finding an effective treatment, especially for medication resistant forms of depression, can be a challenge. Many people opt to decline psychiatric medications, especially because of the high risk for side effects, such as GI upset, dry mouth, weight gain, sexual dysfunction, and a myriad of other symptoms that lend to a worsening state

WHAT IS DEPRESSION?
Depression, also commonly referred to as major depression, clinical depression, or treatment resistant depression typically characterized by low energy and mood, low self-esteem, and loss of interest or pleasure in normally enjoyable activities or social events. Depression causes unnecessary suffering and severe depression can be a risk factor for suicide.

The most commonly diagnosed type of depression is referred to as major depressive disorder. Major depression involves either an overwhelming feeling of sadness or a loss of interest and pleasure in typical activities for at least two weeks, along with some of the other symptoms listed below.

There are many other types of depression, including:

- Persistent depressive disorder (PDD)
PDD, also known as dysthymia, is a type of depression that causes a depressed mood for two or more years.

- Postpartum depression
Postpartum depression refers to the mood changes that may affect a woman after giving birth to a baby.

- Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
SAD is a type of depression that develops due to seasonal changes, usually during the winter months when there’s less
natural sunlight.

- Psychotic depression
Psychotic depression is diagnosed when depression coincides with psychosis (delusions or hallucinations - when a person is out of touch with reality).

- Bipolar disorder is also classified as a type of depression because it causes extreme mood swings that alternate between mania and depression.
